![INSECT OF THE MONTH: 🦋🐝🐞
For the month of March our insect is the Black Swallowtail Butterfly.
These butterflies are known for their striking black wings adorned with yellow, red, and blue spots, and a distinctive yellow band. Black Swallowtails are commonly found in North America and are particularly drawn to plants like Buttonbush for nectar.
FUN FACT 1️⃣: Most Swallowtail Butterflies live about 2-3 weeks but some can live up to 40 days!
FUN FACT 2️⃣: The males and females of this species have slightly different markings, with females often having more blue on their hindwings.

Zen Natives is a woman owned and operated business, meet our amazing owner, Sandra. She is shown in the photo below.
Sandra was an NISD teacher for 31 years before retiring and starting Zen Natives back in 2023. Zen Natives is a dream come true for her. We [Zen Natives] have grown very quickly with the increased desire for our services. We install ALL Texas Native landscapes. We also offer services such as maintenance, cleanups, and hardscape services including decks, pergolas, and pervious walkways.
What are her credentials?
Sandra completed the Texas Master Naturalist certification in 2015, class 36. She also finished all Native Landscape classes through NPSOT within a year or two of the TMN certification. Starting in 2023, She began working with Drake White at the Nectar Bar and soon after started her business full-time. Sandra continues to attend classes, workshops, and collaborates with other professionals to expand her knowledge base. The team also stays in touch with clients, believing strongly in building those relationships to ensure installations are successful.

1. AMERICAN BEAUTYBERRY
These are, in fact, berries! Can you believe it? They are edible to us humans, but in small portions. Moving on, here is all you need to know! Beautyberries are native to the central and southeastern United States, as well as the Caribbean and northern Mexico. They tend to grow 3-6 feet high, bloom from May to July, and have a nectar source that attracts birds and butterflies. They are a host plant to the Snowberry Clearwing moth and Rustic Sphinx moth.
2. FROSTWEED
The Frostweed is a gorgeous flower that is a part of the Rock Rose family and is native to California. It typically grows 18 inches high and blooms from March to April. It attracts butterflies, is resistant to drought, and has a special value to native bees. The Frostweed is also a host plant to the Bordered Patch and Silvery Checkerspot butterflies.
3. DATURA WRIGHTII

The Datura Wrightii is a poisonous plant that is native to the Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico. It starts blooming in May, starting at a white color, and stops blooming in November when it turns pale violet to lavender. It is a larval host to the Carolina Sphinx moth and Manduca Sexta insect.

Tagging Monarch butterflies is part of the Monarch Watch program to follow the butterfly’s migration. A small tag with a serial number is added to the Monarch’s wing. These butterflies were tagged then immediately found nectar plants nearby.
Go through the photos and see if you can find tags on SOME of the butterflies!!
[🙂 Some, unfortunately, were not Texas native plants. Hopefully next year more examples of Texas native plants will be on display for the public. ]
